ABOUT
Personal Statement
I believe that bioengineering can have real impact in reducing the impact of sight threatening eye diseases. I lead a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and clinicians working to develop innovative treatments for these conditions.
My research interests include ocular drug delivery, biomaterial substrates for tissue engineering and the development of laboratory and computational models to test these innovations. I have industrial and clinical collaborators, and have been awarded research funding from EPSRC, MRC, Fight for Sight, the Foundation for the Prevention of Blindness and the Linbury Trust.
As Institute Lead for Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE), I champion the integration of user needs throughout the research lifecycle. I support colleagues in embedding meaningful involvement and engagement practices in their work, ensuring that research is shaped by and responsive to the people it aims to serve.
Research Overview
My research interests concentrate on the design and modification of biomaterials and the biological response to them in various clinically-related applications. I am currently developing ways to improve delivery of injectable therapies, biomaterials to treat cancer of the conjunctiva, substrates to deliver cells to treat corneal ulcers.
Specialties: biomaterials, cell-material interactions, ocular drug delivery, in vitro models
