Personal Statement
Professor Peter Bryant is an environmental and radiation protection specialist with over 18 years of experience across the nuclear fuel cycle, nuclear power, radioactive waste management, decommissioning, and contaminated land.
He has held senior leadership positions including Director of ESG & Radiation Strategy and Head of Environment, Decommissioning & Radiation Safety at Sizewell C/EDF, and CEO and Director General of the World Nuclear Transport Institute (WNTI), leading programmes in environmental permitting, radiation protection, nuclear safety, radioactive waste management, decommissioning, and emergency preparedness.
Professor Bryant is an internationally recognised authority on radiation protection and nuclear policy. He serves on the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) Committee 4, is Vice Chair of Task Group 120 on Radiological Protection for Radiation Emergencies and Malicious Events, and is a member of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency Expert Group on International Recommendations (EGIR). He has also been appointed by the UK Secretary of State as a member of the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM).
Widely recognised for his expertise in stakeholder engagement and risk communication, he has supported numerous International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) missions and international capacity-building programmes.
A former President of the Society for Radiological Protection, Professor Bryant holds a Professorship in Physics at the University of Liverpool, specialising in Radiation Risk Management and Nuclear Energy Policy, and is a Senior Fellow at the University of Suffolk in Environment and Energy Research.
Research Overview
Pete has published multiple peer reviewed papers across the area of Sustainable Decision Making, Communicating Radiation Risk, Skills Development, Nuclear Policy and Radiological Assessment, and is author of the book Airborne Radioactive Discharges and Human Health Effects.
