Personal Statement
I am a computational geocientist with 31 years post PhD experience in academia and industry as a quantitative sedimentary geologist, code developer, researcher and teacher. I completed my PhD in numerical stratigraphic forward modelling in Oxford in 1994 and then worked as a PDRA in Caltech for two years, Liverpool University for two years, and then as a lecturer in University of Cardiff from 1998 to 2002. I worked for Shell E&P in the Netherlands from 2002 to 2010 before returning to academia as a professor in Royal Holloway University of London and then taking up my current position as Professor of Computational Geoscience in Liverpool in 2016.

I'm currently part of the QUEST research group working on Quantitative Experimental Stratigraphy to better understand the nature of stratigraphic heterogeneity and the deep-time history of environmental change. I have diverse research interests in sedimentology, sequence and seismic stratigraphy, basin analysis, geological data science, and numerical forward modelling. I am an experienced teacher and mentor at BSc, MSc, PhD and industry professional level, and I'm currently developing and delivering courses focused on the application of coding and geodata science to various areas of Earth Science. I'm also an Associate Editor for Basin Research, Journal of Sedimentary Geology and Sedimentologika, and active on the executive committee of University Geoscience UK.

 

Research Overview
I have diverse research interest in sedimentology, sequence and seismic stratigraphy, basin analysis, geodata science, and numerical forward modelling, all using a quantitative computational approach. My research projects currently include work on carbonate platform dynamics, siliciclastic delta clinoforms and shelves, sediment routing and stratal patterns on deep-water fans, and the development, preservation and methods for robust identification of cyclicity in strata. My main research skills are in statistical analysis and numerical forward modelling, combined with other more traditional aspects of Earth Science like seismic interpretation and outcrop mapping and analysis. I have developed several numerical stratigraphic forward models and quantiative analysis methods, all coded in VB, C, C#, Matlab and Python.
