Personal Statement
Dr. Neale Watson is an Aerospace Engineering Lecturer (Assistant Professor) at the University of Liverpool, specializing in the crltical safety and operational challenges of rotorcraft in complex environments, specifically focusing on the aerodynamic interactions between helicopters and landing structures such as hospital helipads, ships, and offshore platforms.

His research bridges the gap between digital simulation and physical reality to understand how helicopters interact with complex structures like hospital helipads, ships, and offshore platforms.

Core Expertise & Methodologies:

Computational Modelling: Utilising Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to analyse unsteady turbulent airflows and embedding these models into flight simulation.

Flight Simulation: Operating piloted flight simulation within a six degree-of-freedom motion simulator to assess the effects of unsteady flows on aircraft dynamics and pilot workload.

Experimental Validation: Conducting precision measurements in large recirculating water channels to validate computational data.

Field Testing: Deploying ultrasonic anemometer arrays for real-world helicopter downwash assessments at NHS hospital helipads.

A Chartered Engineer, Neale has led or contributed to several high-profile industrial projects, including airwake validation for the Queen Elizabeth Class (QEC) Aircraft Carriers, the UK Type 26, and the Australian "Hunter" class frigates. His collaborations include BAE Systems, Dstl, QinetiQ, Leonardo, and SEA. Neale has also assessed helideck turbulence of an Offshore Converter Platform using CFD and, more recently, performed downwash assessments for NHS trusts.
