Personal Statement
Chardin Wese Simen is Chair in Finance at the University of Liverpool Management School. Before joining Liverpool, he was Lecturer in Finance at the ICMA Centre, Henley Business School, University of Reading. He has held visiting research positions at Leibniz Universität Hannover, ESCP Europe, and the Université de Nantes. He earned his PhD in Finance (no correction) from the ICMA Centre, Henley Business School, University of Reading, his MSc in International Securities, Investment and Banking with Distinction from the University of Reading, and his BA (Hons) with First Class Honours from the University of Wales.

His research lies in empirical asset pricing, with an emphasis on derivatives, commodity markets, and financial econometrics. He studies how variance and jump risks are priced across asset classes, the information content of derivatives markets, and how news affects financial markets. His work has been published in Management Science, the Journal of Econometrics, the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, and the Journal of Money, Credit and Banking, among other outlets. He has presented his research at numerous UK and international universities and at leading academic conferences, including the meetings of the American Finance Association and the Western Finance Association, and has delivered keynote addresses at national and international academic events.

His research has been recognised with the CFA Institute Paper Prize, the BME Award of the Spanish Finance Association for the best paper on derivative markets, and best paper awards from the Commodity and Energy Markets Association and the Derivative Markets Conference. His work has been supported by grants from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, the British Academy and Leverhulme Trust, and FrontClear.

Professor Wese Simen serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Commodity Markets and Associate Editor of the European Journal of Finance, and is a regular reviewer for leading journals, including the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, and Management Science. He has served as a grant reviewer for UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), ETH Zurich, and the British Academy, and as an external assessor for senior academic appointments in Europe.

He is the Founding Director of the BSc in Finance and Data Analytics at the University of Liverpool, a programme he designed and launched and which holds CFA Institute and CQF accreditation. He has designed and delivered courses across BSc, MSc, PhD, and executive education levels and has received several prizes for his contributions to teaching. He currently serves as external examiner for the MBA and Executive MBA programmes at Cranfield School of Management and for the postgraduate finance programmes at the University of East Anglia and the University of Newcastle. He regularly examines doctoral theses at UK and international institutions, including ESSEC Business School, and has supervised numerous doctoral students, several of whom have gone on to first placements in academia and industry.
