Personal Statement
Dr Clarissa Giebel is Senior Research Fellow in the Institute of Population Health at the University of Liverpool and Social Care Theme Lead in the NIHR ARC NWC.

She is leading the Institute's Dementia Health and Social Care Inequalities Research Group and national and international funded research on inequalities in dementia, including the European INTERDEM Taskforce on Inequalities in Dementia and the ESRC/NIHR 5-year EquaDem Network Plus. In 2019, she set up the successful and growing public-facing Liverpool Dementia & Ageing Research Forum, which enables knowledge and networking on dementia for different stakeholder groups.

As part of her work of engaging with social care organisations, she is leading the North West Coast Living Lab in Ageing & Dementia, which was set up in 2024 in collaboration with the Maastricht-based Limburg Living Lab in Ageing and Long-Term Care. Our NWC Living Lab in Ageing & Dementia comprises 7 social care organisations, linked up with Scientific Linking Pins.

With carers, group members, and the Lewy Body Society, Clarissa has co-produced the first board game about dementia - the Dementia Inequalities Game - an educational game to learn about dementia inequalities, and the first board game about dementia for children - The Dementia Explorer.

She has published over 160 papers, including three policy briefings, in the field, and is Associate Editor for Aging & Mental Health and for Health Expectations. Dr Giebel is accepting PhD and Masters students and DClin Trainees in dementia and ageing, in psychology, social care, and public health, with a focus on health inequalities.
