Personal Statement
David Lissauer is Professor of Global Maternal and Fetal Health at the University of Liverpool, within the Department of Women's and Children's Health.

In December 2020, David was awarded an NIHR Research Professorship to continue his research on maternal infections in Africa. He was resident in Malawi, acting deputy director of the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Trust research institute and working clinically at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Blantyre, Malawi. He led the Maternal Health Research Group and Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health Theme at the Institute.

In 2024, David returned to the UK, working at the University of Liverpool and taking up the role as site lead for Women’s Health. He co-leads the NIHR "SAFE Motherhood" Global Health Research Group.

Research Overview
David’s research interests are in the field of maternal infection and immunity, the problem of recurrent miscarriage and global maternal health. His research seeks to improve the care of women during pregnancy and childbirth in low income countries include clinical trials, evidence synthesis, implementation research and policymaking. He has a specific interest in the prevention and management of maternal infection and sepsis in low resource settings. He has completed important multi-country clinical trials such as the AIMS (antibiotics in miscarriage surgery trial) published in the NEJM, and has an ongoing portfolio of studies in Malawi, Uganda and Pakistan.
