Personal Statement
Dr Dane Anderton is Associate Professor and Director of MBA Programmes at the University of Liverpool Management School, where he also serves as Director of Studies for the Liverpool MBA. Appointed by the Dean of the Management School, he provides strategic and operational leadership for the School's portfolio of MBA programmes, overseeing curriculum design, academic quality, student experience, international, and programme innovation. He works closely with academic colleagues, professional services, and external partners to ensure the continued success of the School's globally recognised MBA portfolio, which contributes to the Management School's AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS triple accreditation and its position within theFinancial Times Global MBA Top 100.

Prior to joining the University of Liverpool, Dane held senior academic leadership positions at Alliance Manchester Business School, University of Manchester, where he was Academic Director of Executive Education Programmes and Social Responsibility Lead, and at Manchester Metropolitan University, where he served as Director of MBA Apprenticeships. Across these roles he has led the design, validation and delivery of postgraduate management programmes, executive education, degree apprenticeships and work-based learning initiatives. He has also contributed extensively to programme validation, quality assurance and external examining across the UK higher education sector.

Dane's research spans both strategy and management education. His disciplinary research examines strategic regional development, place leadership, industrial agglomeration and inclusive economic growth. His ESRC-funded PhD at the University of Liverpool explored the development of the video games and life sciences sectors within the Liverpool City Region through collaboration with Liverpool Vision.

His pedagogic research focuses on the future of management education, with particular interests in consultancy-based learning, experiential and simulation-based pedagogy, responsible leadership education, international learning experiences, and the application of artificial intelligence to management education. His recent work has explored the use of AI avatars to develop confidence, communication and professional skills, alongside the role of consultancy projects in embedding authentic, real-world learning within MBA curricula. He regularly presents his work at national and international conferences, including AMBA, EFMD, Advance HE and the Chartered Association of Business Schools.

Dane is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) and a Chartered Management and Business Educator (CMBE). He is an experienced external examiner and quality reviewer, contributing to programme validation and enhancement across the UK higher education sector. His work is driven by a commitment to designing innovative, evidence-informed management education that develops responsible leaders capable of creating positive organisational and societal impact.

Research Overview
Dane completed his ESRC-funded PhD at the University of Liverpool Management School in 2014. His doctoral research examined the development and agglomeration of the video games and life sciences industries within the Liverpool City Region, undertaken in collaboration with Liverpool Vision. This work established his research interests in regional economic development, industrial clustering, place leadership and innovation-led growth.

His disciplinary research continues to explore strategy beyond the firm, focusing on place leadership, regional competitiveness, innovation ecosystems and the strategic development of cities and regions. Through research and consultancy, he has worked with local authorities, combined authorities and regional partners across the North of England on issues relating to innovation districts, creative and knowledge-intensive industries, and inclusive economic development.

Alongside his strategy research, Dane has established a growing international profile in management education scholarship. His pedagogic research examines how business schools can better prepare managers and leaders through authentic, experiential and technology-enhanced learning. His work focuses on consultancy-based education, management simulations, international experiential learning, responsible leadership development and the integration of artificial intelligence into management education.

More recently, his research has explored the use of AI avatars to enhance confidence, communication and professional skills, alongside consultancy pedagogy as a mechanism for embedding real-world learning into MBA curricula. He has presented this work at leading international conferences, including AMBA, EFMD, Advance HE and the Chartered Association of Business Schools, and continues to collaborate with colleagues and industry partners to evaluate innovative approaches to management education.

Across both his disciplinary and pedagogic research, Dane is committed to producing evidence-informed scholarship that bridges theory and practice, advances the quality of management education, and develops graduates equipped to lead responsibly in increasingly complex organisational and societal contexts.
