Personal Statement
Alex Howard is a Senior Clinical Lecturer in Antimicrobial Resistance in the University of Liverpool Department of Antimicrobial Pharmacodynamics and Therapeutics and an Honorary Consultant in Medical Microbiology at the University Hospitals of Liverpool Group.

Dr Howard qualified in Medicine and Surgery in 2011 and undertook a Masters in Diagnostic Parasitology at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, before undertaking Membership of the Royal College of Physicians then specialist training in Clinical Microbiology. He obtained Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists and commenced a consultant role in 2019.

He undertook a PhD in the application of machine learning to diagnostic Clinical Microbiology then commenced a Senior Clinical Lecturer role in 2026. His research interests are in the application of artificial intelligence, mathematical modelling and simulation to antimicrobial decision-making and resistance, including the use of clinical decision support systems and pharmacometrics. He performs most of his clinical work at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, where his clinical subspecialty interests include immunocompromise, stem cell transplant, immuno-oncology and medical mycology.

Research Overview
Dr Howard's primary research interest is in the application of data science, health informatics, and artificial intelligence (AI) to the problem of global antimicrobial resistance. His sub-interests in this area are:
1. AI-driven decision tools in antimicrobial prescribing and antimicrobial drug development
2. AI-driven systems efficiency software in microbiology laboratories and clinical settings
3. Dataflow integration for the application of real-time health informatics
4. Research and Public Health governance in health informatics
