Professor Barry F.A. Quinn, Vice Dean for Scholarship & Staff Development,
Chair in Restorative Dentistry & Dental Education
GDC registered Specialist and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry Prosthodontics, Endodontics and Periodontics. Barry is presently the Academic Lead and Head of the Unit of Restorative Dentistry, in the School of Dentistry, a discipline which accounts for about 70% of dental practice. In 2023 Barry was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship, only one of twelve awarded to dental educators in the last 24 years of the Advance-HE recognition scheme.

Barry graduated from the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals, University of London, which subsequently merged with King's College London. He completed his specialist training at Guy's and St Thomas' hospitals and intercalated an MSc (hons & distinction) with clinical training at the Eastman Dental Institute, University College London. Leadership & Advisory Roles
Professor Quinn joined the University of Liverpool in 2021, having been previously an undergraduate lead for over 240 students at King’s College London, Learning & Teaching Coordinator (2007-2013) and Curriculum Lead for years 4/5 of the BDS programme, examination board chair for years 1 & 2 BDS and Academic Lead for the Management and Leadership and Applied Dental Sciences components. Barry previously was Outreach Lead for a 24 Dental Surgeries Polyclinic providing both undergraduate and postgraduate clinical care for an underserved population in south London. Barry is presently Secretary General for the Association of Dental Education in Europe, Past-President of the International Association of Dental Research (IADR), Education Research Group and the British Dental Association Metropolitan Branch (largest branch in UK), President-Elect for the Prosthodontic Research Group (IADR) and President of the Section of Odontology for the Royal Society of Medicine, member of the Dental Schools Council's Clinical Academic Workforce Planning Committee, and NIHR ClinEdR committee. His leadership extends to various advisory roles, including being a Simulation Advisor for the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm (2022) and a member of the UK Government No.10 Delivery Unit Group - Ops Leaders & Acute Clinical Reference Group (2024). Education guidance invited panellist for the European Federation of Periodontology and the European Society for Endodontics (2023).

External Examining
Barry has been an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Edinburgh and Glasgow as well as being an external examiner for the Dental Schools in Queen Mary’s University of London, Belfast, Birmingham, Cardiff, UCLan and internationally for the College of Dental Surgeons Hong Kong, International Medical University Malaysia and Khartoum College of Medical and Dental Sciences, Sudan. He has been an OSCE lead for the Overseas Registration Examination as well as being an examiner and question writer for MJDF, MFDS and MRD. Barry has examined over 250 postgraduates for King's College London, MClinDent Prosthodontics (flexible) part VII, University College London MClinDent Pros and MSc in Conservative Dentistry and the University of Birmingham MSc in Restorative Dentistry. Barry has examined PhD candidates for the University of Brescia (Italy), Queen Mary's University of London and University of Sheffield.

Programme Quality Assurance & Educational Consultancy
Nationally, Barry has been an Educational Associate to the General Dental Council reviewing the University of Bristol and Queen’s University Belfast and is presently on the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Education Committee. Barry was recently (2024) invited to review the University of Manchester Dental School Curriculum.
Internationally, he has chaired and been a panellist for the Association of Dental Education in Europe, bench marking curricula in Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon. Barry has also been a consultant for several universities (Karolinska Institute, Stockholm Sweden) implementing haptically-enabled virtual reality simulation.

Awards
Barry was awarded a King James IV Professorship from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2021. The King James Professorships are the most senior academic award made by the College. They are intended to recognise a substantial body of work by an individual not less than 5 years from substantive appointment as a consultant or an equivalent position.
In 2024 he was awarded a Learning, Teaching & Student Experience award from the University of Liverpool and in 2023 National Teaching Fellowship from Advance-HE.
He has been awarded British Society of Restorative Dentistry Poster Award (2018), the European Prosthodontic Association Specialist Recognition (2018) the inaugural ADEE Inter-Professional Educators award (2016) as well as ADEE Mature Educators award (2013), short listed for a Times Higher Education award (2013), KCL Education award as well as best KCL research project award (2012), NAIDEX Health Promotion award (2012) Medical Futures award (2011), runner up for a Simulation Technology Enhanced Learning Initiative award (2010) and the Medal for best performance in the Membership in Restorative Dentistry Examination (RCS Edin) in 1994.

Research
His research has involved working with inter-professional teams in developing haptic simulation for dental, medical, nursing and veterinary professionals. He has over 200 publications/conference papers including being co-author of two books and has written six book chapters. Professor Quinn was the clinical lead in the HapTEL project funded jointly by the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council and Economic and Social Science Research Council UK for £1,225000. This project won several awards including a Medical Futures award in 2011 as well as KCL research project of the year. Barry was also the ADEE academic lead in a nine-university partner Erasmus-plus project OHealth-Edu (£340,000).

Civic Engagement
Professor Quinn's dedication to civic engagement and public health is evident in his efforts to promote oral health and involvement in various public health initiatives. His contributions have been recognized by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool in 2023 & 2024 and in 2021, Barry won a King’s Civic engagement award for working with the Borough food cooperative.

Sustainability
In 2023 Barry led the winning campus wide application for the University of Liverpool from the Henry Schein/ADEE Practice Green Awards.
