Personal Statement
Dr Martina Manes is a Lecturer in Civil Engineering at the University of Liverpool. Her research focuses on fire safety engineering, fire risk assessment, fire statistics, and engineering resilience, with particular emphasis on supporting evidence-based policy and improving the resilience of communities and the built environment.

She leads research on the collection, analysis, and application of fire incident data to support risk-informed decision-making. Dr Manes is the Institutional Lead for the European Commission-funded EU FireStat Phase 2 project focused on the development of the first harmonised European fire incident data collection methodology. This work supports the creation of a European fire statistical dataset and contributes to the development of fire safety policies and practices at national and international levels. She is also part of the MSCA Staff Exchange eRisiko, advancing research and knowledge on EV fire risk.

Her research combines engineering, data analysis, and social science perspectives and is developed in collaboration with universities, industry, Fire and Rescue Services, policymakers, and international organisations. She has contributed to projects commissioned by the UK Government and serves as a UK expert on British Standards Institution and ISO committees related to fire safety engineering and testing.

Dr Manes is committed to research-led teaching and the development of future engineers. She supervises doctoral researchers and integrates real-world engineering challenges into her teaching to enhance student learning and employability. She also leads the Engineering Resilience Cluster within the School of Engineering, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration to address challenges related to safety, resilience, and sustainable infrastructure.
