Personal Statement
Dr. Ron Mahabir is a Human Geographer specialising in computational approaches that use data science tools, techniques, and methodologies to analyse spatial patterns, understand complex socio-environmental interactions, and address challenges related to urban planning, environmental management, and social equity. His main area of expertise lies in understanding cities, with a particular interest in the drivers of urban change, including the dynamics of urban growth, the impacts of climate change, and the role of technology in shaping sustainable urban futures.
Dr. Mahabir's research has gained significant recognition, with his work being featured in various prestigious journals such as PLoS ONE, the International Journal of Remote Sensing, and the International Journal of Image and Data Science. His contributions extend beyond research, as he actively participates in the academic community by serving on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Image and Data Science. In addition, he plays a key role in shaping the discourse around data science and geography by serving as a programme committee member for several international conferences, including Data, the International Conference on Information Management and Big Data, and the International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. His ongoing commitment to advancing the field has made him a prominent figure in the intersection of geography, data science, and urban studies.
Prior to joining the University of Liverpool in 2022, Dr. Mahabir was an Assistant Professor of Data Science at George Mason University. Before that, he served as a Postdoctoral Research Associate with the Center for Geoinformatics and Geospatial Intelligence at George Mason University. He is also a former Fulbright Scholar, an experience that has shaped his global perspective and commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, enriching his research and teaching approach in the fields of human geography and data science. He holds a BSc in Computing and Information Science from the University of London, an MSc in Geoinformatics from the University of Liverpool, and Ph.D Earth Systems and Geoinformation Science from the George Mason University.

Urban Geographies
