Personal Statement
Dr Abhishek Mahajan is a globally recognised Consultant Radiologist, academic leader, and innovator in cancer imaging, currently based at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust, Liverpool, and serving as Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Liverpool. With a career spanning clinical excellence, translational research, and leadership in artificial intelligence, he is at the forefront of advancing precision oncology through imaging.

Dr Mahajan has an exceptional academic portfolio, with over 500 peer-reviewed publications, more than 10,000 citations, and an h-index of 41. His work bridges clinical practice and cutting-edge research, particularly in the application of artificial intelligence to cancer imaging. He is the Founder of the Cancer Imaging Research Group (CIRG) and Principal Investigator of the CAN-I-AID Biobank Project, through which he secured NIHR funding to establish one of the UK’s pioneering Cancer Imaging Data Centres. An accomplished research leader, Dr Mahajan has served as PI/Co-PI on 20+ imaging trials, securing over £1.3 million in competitive research funding. This includes a successful NIHR Capital Investment award (£63,257.30) to develop an advanced imaging data infrastructure, alongside funded projects in deep learning, and grants supported by Cancer Research UK.

Beyond research, Dr Mahajan plays a significant leadership role within the NHS and academic community. He serves as International Medical Graduate Lead, Chair of the LGBTQ+ Staff Network, and Clinical Staff Governor at Clatterbridge, while also contributing nationally as an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion representative for the Royal College of Radiologists and as an FRCR examiner.

An internationally invited speaker and collaborator, Dr Mahajan has contributed to major multicentre trials across head and neck, rectal, prostate, ocular, and neuro-oncology. His contributions have been recognised through multiple awards, including Oncoradiologist of the Year and international research honours.
