ABOUT

Personal Statement
Prior to joining the University of Liverpool, I taught at University College London, Birkbeck College and Lancaster University. I am also a practising translator and most recently worked as an Arabic translator at the British Library for seven years.
I hold a PhD in Linguistics and MA in Language Studies from Lancaster University, and a BA in English Language from Ain Shams University in Egypt. I am also a Chartered Linguist with a DipTrans from CIOL Qualifications.

Research Overview
My research interests include Arabic linguistics, sociolinguistics and translation. I am particularly interested in language and (trans)national identity, language and political ideologies, linguistic landscapes, Arabic transliteration and Arabizi, professional translation practices and standards in the UK, and translation in the cultural heritage sector. I welcome enquiries for postgraduate supervision on any of these topics.
