Personal Statement
Professor Bentley is a board-certified veterinary neurologist-neurosurgeon, and a canine/human brain cancer researcher.
He performs translational studies (between canine and human) and translational clinical trials of canine glioma, using spontaneously occurring gliomas in companion animal (pet) dogs as a model for human glioma / glioblastoma.
His current translational canine clinical trial is the DOG-FIGhT Trial, developing ferumoxytol (nanoparticle iron) as a radiosensitizer for glioma. In the first arm of the study, dogs diagnosed with glioma receive ferumoxytol pre-operatively, and then surgical biopsies are studied for the impact of ferumoxytol (markers of M1 and M2 subtypes of macrophages, apoptosis, proliferation rate, Prussian blue). Dogs additionally receive post-operative radiation therapy, as an incentive for enrolment.
His previous translational canine glioma clinical trials include metronomic chlorambucil chemotherapy, and post-operative application of genetically-modified oncolytic herpesvirus (M032).
He is a founding member of the Comparative Brain Tumor Consortium of the NIH, and a member of the University of Liverpool Brain Cancer research group.

Tim's research involves treating dogs with brain tumours to develop new cures for dogs and people with brain cancer. 1) Translational brain cancer research: translating from spontaneous glioma in pet dogs to glioma / glioblastoma in humans.

2) Building the translational model of spontaneous canine glioma, with a focus upon immunological and genomic analyses.
3) Studies involving the diagnosis, pathology, treatment and prognosis of canine glioma.
