Personal Statement
Aaron leads the Computational Materials Science and Engineering (CMSE) group. The CMSE group exploits molecular and coarse-grained particle dynamics methods to simulate the formation of materials and understand how they interact with their environments. Applications to a wide range of systems include self- and directed-assembly, nucleation and crystallisation, adsorption and the evolution of solid/liquid interfaces. The goal is to provide a fundamental understanding of material assembly that facilitate the fabrication of functional materials from the bottom-up.

Aaron joined the School of Engineering in October 2023 as a Lecturer in Materials Science. He obtained his PhD from the University of Warwick in 2015, completing his studies in the Department of Chemistry and Centre for Scientific Computing. Following this, he joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Sheffield, initially as an EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellow (2016) and later as a Research Associate (2017-2019). Prior to joining the School of Engineering, Aaron was a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Chemical Engineering at University College London (2019-2023).

 

Research Overview
The Computational Materials Science and Engineering (CMSE) group applies and develops computational tools to simulate collective phenomena associated with sustainable material fabrication, as well as the properties of solid materials in environments that mimic real systems. The techniques we use are based on molecular and coarse grained particle dynamics simulation methods. We use enhanced sampling techniques and tools from data science to determine the mechanisms and dynamics that describe and control material formation across multiple length and time scales. Additionally, we explore the properties of solids immersed in fluids to understand interfacial processes such as adsorption, charge accumulation and templated assembly. Our research lies at the junction between Chemistry, Physics and Engineering and is applied to explore functional materials, advanced composite materials and formulations for a range of applications.
