ABOUT
Personal Statement
Mahmoud M. Naguib is a Senior Lecturer in Virology at the University of Liverpool. His research focuses on exploring the interspecies transmission mechanisms of influenza viruses and the emergence of pandemics.
Mahmoud holds a doctoral degree in Virology from Leipzig University, Germany (2017). Following his PhD, he undertook postdoctoral research at Uppsala University, Sweden, alongside an EMBO Short-Term Fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics and the University of Konstanz, Germany. In 2022, he was appointed Docent in Experimental Virology at Uppsala University before joining the University of Liverpool in 2024.
His research integrates experimental virology, genomics and animal infection models to understand the mechanisms that shape influenza virus evolution and transmission. Particular interests include viral reassortment, host adaptation, and the cellular determinants of infection revealed through single-cell genomics. His laboratory employs reverse genetics, whole-genome sequencing, RNA sequencing and 10x single-cell technologies, combined with studies in avian, murine and ferret models conducted in CL-2 and CL-3 facilities.
At Liverpool, Mahmoud leads a growing research group currently comprising a PhD student and a Master's student, with projects spanning influenza virus reassortment and host responses.
Mahmoud is a member of the Global Consortium for H5N8 and Related Influenza Viruses and has established research partnerships across Europe, North America, the Middle East and Southeast Asia, including collaborations with Freiburg University, the Texas Biomedical Research Institute, the University of Georgia and a network of academic and governmental partners working on avian influenza virus.
