Personal Statement
Stephen Chapman is a Lecturer in Computational Biology within the Institute of Systems, Molecular and Integrative Biology at the University of Liverpool. His research focuses on computational biology, developing and applying genome-scale metabolic models, and building logical network models to investigate cellular metabolism and signalling in plants and animals.

Stephen completed his PhD in Systems Biology at the University of Manchester, where he combined mathematical modelling with experimental approaches to investigate the regulation of photosynthesis and cellular metabolism. Before joining Liverpool in 2024, he was a Teaching Fellow at Aberystwyth University, where he taught across biotechnology and bioinformatics and developed an interest in higher education pedagogy. He subsequently held two postdoctoral research positions at Aix-Marseille University, applying computational systems biology to topics including mitochondrial metabolism, metabolic disease, and cancer.

At Liverpool, Stephen is also the Programme Director of Bioinformatics and teaches undergraduate and postgraduate bioinformatics and computational biology, with particular interests in metabolic modelling, systems biology, and reproducible computational research. His current scholarly work also explores the design of authentic assessment in computational biology education and the responsible integration of artificial intelligence into higher education.
