Personal Statement
I am a Senior Lecturer in Cognitive Psychology and Modelling, and a member of the Live-DeMo (Liverpool Decision-making and Modelling) Lab. I am also an Honorary Research Fellow at one of my previous institutions back home in Australia, the University of Queensland. My research focuses on the areas of cognitive psychology, computational modelling, and psychological methods, where I utilise a combination of experimental and computational approaches to better understand human cognition. My teaching focuses on classical (i.e., frequenstist) statistics at the undergraduate level, and advanced statistics and computational methods at the postgraduate level.
I completed my PhD in Psychology at University of Newcastle (Australia; 2014-2017), and then worked as a Postdoctoral Scholar at Vanderbilt University (USA; 2017-2018) and the University of Amsterdam (Netherlands; 2018-2020). I was then awarded the Australian Research Council's Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA), which I worked on at the University of Queensland (Australia; 2020-2023), before working as a Tenured Researcher ("Akademischer Rat auf Lebenszeit") at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (Germany; 2023-2024). Finally (yes, I moved around *a lot*; it's exhausting just writing about it), I started as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the University of Liverpool in August 2024.
Research Overview
My current research mostly focuses on understanding human cognition through mathematical models, which can be classed as a combination of the broad research areas of cognitive psychology, computational modelling, and psychological methods. More specifically, my theoretical and empirical research largely falls within the area of human decision-making, and involves the development and testing of models that are able to explain response time and choice (as well as additional pieces of information, such as changes of mind), such as extensions of the well-known and commonly used evidence accumulation framework. My more methodological research largely involves the development and implementation of Bayesian methods for estimating and comparing cognitive models, as well as methods for estimating and comparing models with computationally intractable likelihood functions.
