Earthquake Cycle
How are earthquakes triggered, and how do they interact with each other and their geological and rheological context? This is one of the most fundamental questions in the field of seismology, yet it remains hard to answer. As a seismologist, I aim to humbly contribute towards answering this critical question, which holds significant importance for individuals and countries residing in seismically hazardous areas.
Machine Learning
Machine learning offers numerous opportunities to process the ever-growing seismological databases, including catalogs, waveforms, and tomography, thereby achieving higher resolution and broader applications than ever before. Moreover, unsupervised learning algorithms represent a novel tool for enhancing our understanding of natural processes without relying on empirical modeling as done previously. This approach is likely to pave the way for new discoveries in the future.
Rock Deformation
Earthquakes are inevitably linked to rock mechanics, which, in my opinion, cannot be fully replicated by any statistical approach on a global scale. This is why studying fractures at different scales is essential to incorporate more physically driven laws into our models of seismogenesis.
