ABOUT

Personal Statement
I work on the social and cultural history of Britain in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. My principal research interest is the history of crime. I am interested in the relationship between crime and the cleavages of class, sex and race, and in the role of the media in generating fear of crime and forging stereotypes of criminals and crime 'hotspots'. I am also interested in the historical development of systems of policing and punishment and the ways in which the criminal justice system has both reflected and reinforced wider social inequalities.
