Personal Statement
Dr. Kyle Worrall is a Lecturer in Game Design in the Music Department and holds a PhD in Intelligent Games and Games Intelligence from the University of York, where as part of the Centre for Doctoral Training in IGGi, his work specialised in the application of deep learning to video game music and explored the ways in which non-generative AI can be used to enhance player experiences. His further work explores how AI can be used to support audio professionals without infringing on the creative and fun parts of music creation, and more specifically into how musicians use and adopt such tools.

Beyond research, Kyle is the founder of University of York spinout Cocreative Technology LTD, which builds on his PhD IP which uses deep learning to perform music like humans, to develop ethical, human-in-the-loop AI tools for music creators, and he has a variety of experience in industry/freelance roles, which inform his teaching, such as: bass player in a signed death metal band; bass player on cruise ships; freelance game and film composer; freelance live sound engineer; and Junior Audio Programmer for Nemisindo LTD.

Kyle has previous experience as a Lecturer in Games Programming in the Computer Science department of Edge Hill University, and has completed a PGCTHE with distinction which explores the impact of neurodiversity on student attainment in HE settings.

 

Research Overview
Research topics: procedural and generative music, machine learning and deep learning for music, game design, game audio, AI tool adoption, ethics and legal considerations around AI, player experience around intelligence audio systems, integrating deep learning for audio in game engines.

PGR Supervision: Previously supervised three MRes candidates exploring: music implementation in horror games, LLMs for music analysis, and LLMs as composition companions.

Grants:
- Successful in bidding for a grant for commercialising research-based IP from the AI Super Connector Programme (AISC) in collaboration with Google, Imperial College London, University of York, University of Liverpool, University of Leeds (£20,000 and the equivalent of £20,000 in Google Cloud credits).
- Successful in bidding for Edge Hill University's Departmental Opportunity Fund (£5,000).
- Currently awaiting the result of a bid for the Leverhulme SRG (£10,000)
