ABOUT

Personal Statement
I am a lecturer in Politics here at the University of Liverpool. My work focuses on disability in politics, UK and Scottish politics, parliaments, and the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL). In my research, I investigate how institutional structures shape representation, expertise, and inclusion.

Before joining the University of Liverpool, I worked as a Lecturer in European Politics at the University of Glasgow. I have also previously worked at Napier University in Edinburgh as an Associate Lecturer. I received my PhD from the University of Glasgow in 2017.

My current research proposes an ableism turn to better understand how politics is shaped around the mind and body.

Summary of interests:
• Disability in Politics
• Comparative Politics
• Legislative Studies
• Scottish Politics
• British Politics
• European Union Politics

Research Overview
My research examines how institutional power structures shape political representation, knowledge production, and systemic inclusion. While my foundational work analyses legislative expertise, committee governance, and administrative mobility within the European Union and the UK, my current research agenda proposes an ‘ableist turn’ for political analysis. By exploring how political systems structure power and access around mind and body norms, my work bridges comparative institutionalism with critical disability studies. This research seeks to reshape our conceptual understanding of democratic organisation.

In addition to my core research, I am dedicated to the scholarship of teaching and learning. I publish on higher education pedagogy, focusing on creating equitable learning environments. Specifically, my work explores the developmental benefits of collaborative lecturing and mentorship for early-career academics, and I design institutional good-practice frameworks for active learning - with a special emphasis on accommodating dyslexic students and building inclusive classrooms.
