Personal Statement
Professor Chris Butterworth was appointed as a specialist NHS Consultant in 2003 to lead the Regional Oral & Facial Prosthetic Rehabilitation service for patients with head and neck cancer. He is also the lead clinician for dental implant treatment at the Dental Hospital and provides complex oral rehabilitation for patients with oral cancer, severe maxillofacial trauma, congenital hypodontia and other complex cases.

He has a special interest in pre-prosthetic surgery and peri-implant soft tissue management as well as the use of computer aided planning and surgical execution of dental implant treatment.

He has pioneered the use of dental and zygomatic implants at primary cancer surgery as a means to provide rapid dental rehabilitation and is a recognised International leader in the field of oral cancer rehabilitation. He was appointed as an Honorary Professor in Maxillofacial Prosthodontics in 2019.

Research Overview
Professor Butterworth's research is largely confined to the maxillofacial prosthodontic treatment of complex Head & Neck Cancer patients. He undertakes clinical outcome studies mainly in relationship to the use of Zygomatic Implants in this field and is an international leader in this treatment modality. He is interested in the rapid post-surgical restoration of the H&N cancer patient and is a key innovator in the combined use of zygomatic implants together with micro-vascular reconstructive techniques to maximise benefit for patients. He also contributes to research into Osteoradionecrosis and is a key recruiter of patients to clinical trials within the Head & Neck Centre.
