Personal Statement
Carol is a Chartered Town and Country Planning professional and scholar. Prior to academia, she was Principal Planner at Northumberland County Council where she led the Environment and Natural Resources Local Development Framework (LDF) team. Prior to this role, she was Principal Planner at Blyth Valley Borough Council. Both roles involved preparation of Local Policy, Master Plans and Development Briefs. Carol also was responsible for representing the Council at Development Control Public Inquiries as well as the Public Examination of various Local Development Documents such as the Blyth Valley Core Strategy and Development Control Policies documents in 2007. Carol worked collaboratively with various stakeholders, including the Government Office for the Northeast (GONE), One North East Regional Development Agency (ONE), the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), as well as the Environment Agency, Natural England, Northumbrian Water and Sport England.

After almost 6 years working in practice, Carol moved into academia in 2010 to pursue doctoral research. In 2013, she finalised her PhD thesis, which bridges the fields of Planning Theory (Collaborative Planning and Post-Positivism) with Critical Heritage Studies. Carol also holds a Masters degree in Town Planning (2005) with distinction, a First Class Bachelor of Science in Geography (2004) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Urban Design (2006).

Carol has won several scholarships, research awards and bursaries, including the highly prestigious Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Sir George Pepler International Award in 2006 for her research in Helsinki, Finland. She recently (2015) won 'Best Paper Prize' at the Aesop YA Conference 'Differences and Connections: Beyond Universal Theories in Planning, Urban, and Heritage Studies' in Palermo, Italy.

Carol joined the University of Liverpool in October 2014 and teaches on both Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes. She contributes to the following modules:

• Localism and Neighbourhood planning
• Epistemologies guiding planning/conservation practice
