Personal Statement
I am a Professor of Paediatric Infection at the University of Liverpool, England, and Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Infectious Diseases, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool. My research programme covers serious bacterial infections (including sepsis), biomarker-guided antimicrobial stewardship, and early warning scores for early recognition of deterioration. I have over 25 years’ experience of clinical research in hospitalised children with infections, both in the UK and in Malawi. My research spans the full translational spectrum from -omics to implementation yet is patient-centred and fully embedded in daily NHS practice. I have been a member of national and international committees developing guidelines and definitions for paediatric sepsis. I have both led and been a co-investigator on randomised controlled trials of biomarkers to guide antimicrobial decisions in adults and children. I promote clinical excellence through research, evidence-based practice, teaching, audit and quality improvement, and seek to model diversity, inclusivity and equity in clinical academia. I am currently funded by NIHR and H2020. I set up the NIHR Clinical Research Network North West Coast Research Scholars Programme in 2018, and was appointed as Clinical Director in November 2020. In March 2022, I was appointed as an NIHR Senior Investigator.

Research Overview
My research interests are a)understanding the host response to serious bacterial infection, b) improving the diagnosis of serious bacterial infection including sepsis, c) improving antimicrobial stewardship using biomarker-guided algorithms, and d) recognition of deterioration in hospitalised children. I work and collaborate locally, nationally and globally.

My research career to date covers experimental medicine, clinical trials and implementation science and spans the full translational spectrum from innovation to applied health. I am passionate about building research capacity within undergraduates, trainees and NHS senior clinicians. My clinical research is patient-focused, needs-driven and science-led. My research is funded by NIHR and H2020.My vision to make every patient encounter a research opportunity, transform healthcare and save lives.
