ABOUT

Personal Statement
I am an Essex-born, Oxford-trained clinical academic with a professional background in chemical pathology. I have held academic posts at the Universities of Sheffield, Oxford and Liverpool. My main research interest and expertise is in human physiology and biochemistry in vivo studied by quantitative non-invasive means, particularly by magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging methods. I have authored about 400 peer-reviewed publications (h-index 70 in Scopus, 88 in Google Scholar: ORCID 0000-0002-8324-9666). My contribution to research was recognised by the award of Doctor of Science from the University of Oxford in 2016. I have worked at the University of Liverpool since 1996 (part-time from 2024). I currently chair the University’s Central Committee on Research Ethics; my previous roles include Head of the Department of Musculoskeletal and Ageing Science (2017-23), Director of the Liverpool Magnetic Resonance Imaging Centre (2008-24), and a variety of leadership roles in postgraduate research (2001-23). I am an Honorary Consultant in Chemical Pathology at the NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group (UHLG), where I also represent the University of Liverpool as a member of the Council of Governors. I am Adjunct Professor at the Center for Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, Medical University of Vienna, Austria.
