Personal Statement
II am a Consultant in Palliative Medicine with an 80:20 split of clinical and research time.

Clinical Role
I am the clinical lead for the community palliative care team in St Helens and Knowsley, Merseyside. I went to medical school in Galway in Ireland and qualified in 2006. I did my specialty training in Merseyside from 2012 to 2016 when I held Academic Clinical Fellowship and Clinical Lecturer posts. I completed my training as a consultant in 2016.

Other positions
• Cancer Sub-Specialty Research Lead for ‘Palliative, supportive and psychosocial psychology’ for the North West coast.
• Research lead for the Merseyside Palliative Medicine Trainers committee.



Research Role
I hold an honorary Clinical Fellowship in the Palliative Care Institute at the University of Liverpool. I am cell and molecular biologist. My primary degree is in Biotechnology and I received my PhD in 1996 from Dublin City University, Ireland.

Research Grants Held
Wellcome Trust Seed award for Science 2016

My main research interests include the biology of dying and the development of a test to recognise the last weeks and days of life. I am also interested in the role of Magnesium in pain.
