Personal Statement
Sophie Jones is a Lecturer in Eighteenth-Century History. She completed her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the University of Liverpool, and received her PhD in 2018.

Sophie first joined the Department of History in 2019 as a postdoctoral researcher on the AHRC-funded project, ‘Libraries, Reading Communities & Cultural Formation in the Eighteenth-Century Atlantic’, having previously held a postdoctoral research position at Keele University, working on the AHRC-funded project 'Business News in the Atlantic World, 1620-1763.'

Research Overview
A historian of the eighteenth-century British Atlantic, my research focuses on the socio-cultural development of the North American colonies; in particular, the origins of political loyalism and the activities of loyalists during the American Revolution. My forthcoming monograph (arising from my doctoral research) considers how local socio-cultural contexts shaped political identities in the colony of New York during the American Revolution.

Beyond my work on American loyalism, I have published widely on a range of topics including early-modern merchant families, eighteenth-century subscription libraries, and early-modern literacy.
