All of science, and especially physics, underpins modern everyday life, from the cultural enrichment of conceptually transforming discoveries to the development of new technologies which sustain and improve the everyday quality of our lives. Physicists in Liverpool, myself included, are driven by a deep interest to understand how the Universe works. Like all scientists, physicists contributions to society are greatest when their commitment and innovation are uninhibited by misplaced and wasteful bureaucracy which are based on ill-defined metrics often mistakenly believed to be measures of "efficiency" and "accountability".
