Personal Statement
My research interests lie at the interface of Sociolinguistics and Critical Discourse Studies. I am interested in social, race and gender (in) equalities and the ways language is used to sustain or challenge such inequalities. My current work proposes a critical storytelling approach that draws attention to the uses and misuses of narratives in an era of intensified storytelling. Specifically, I explore how humanitarian narratives of/about migration often perpetuate harmful stereotypes of 'deserving' and 'good' migrants. Another strand of my research focuses on standardised language ideologies, dialect and regional identity in school settings in light of a recent shift of educational attention to 'oracy'. This is tied to the Impact Case Study 'Enhancing teaching practices and empowering students'. I am a member of the UKRI ESRC Grant Assessment Panels and of the ESRC Peer Review College. I sit on the editorial board of the journal Critical Discourse Studies.
