Personal Statement
Mark is currently Professor of Health Geography (2024-Present), having previously been appointed as Lecturer in Health Geography (2015-2018), Senior Lecturer in Health Geography (2018-2022) and Reader in Health Geography (2022-2024) all within the Department of Geography & Planning at the University of Liverpool. During this time they were awarded the Alan Beeston Early Career Researcher of the Year in 2017. Prior to this, they were a Research Associate in Public Health at ScHARR (School of Health and Related Research), University of Sheffield (2013-2015). Mark completed their PhD in Geography at the University of Sheffield (2010-2013) under the supervision of Daniel Vickers and Danny Dorling. Their PhD explored the clustering of mortality patterns for England and Wales through the creation of an area-based classification. They also hold a MSc in Social and Spatial Inequalities (University of Sheffield, 2009-2010) and a First Class BA (Hons) in Geography (University of Sheffield, 2006-2009). Their commitment to continued professional development regarding under- and post-graduate teaching was recognised with the award of Fellow of the Higher Education Association status (2017; Associate Fellow awarded in 2015).

Research Overview
Mark's research examines how new forms of (big) data (e.g., images, text, loyalty card records) can supplement traditional administrative datasets (e.g., mortality records, surveys, hospital admissions data) for understanding the social and spatial drivers of health inequalities.
