Personal Statement
Paul Losty is a Professor of Paediatric Surgery at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital Liverpool one of the largest Children’s Hospitals in the UK and Europe. Professor Losty trained in General Surgery and Paediatric Surgery in the major university teaching hospitals affiliated with the Royal College Of Surgeons in Dublin Ireland, Massachusetts General Hospital Harvard Medical School Boston, USA and Alder Hey Children's Hospital Liverpool. Professor Losty has worked as a university academic surgeon at the University Of Liverpool for almost 30 years providing clinical and faculty leadership in academic paediatric surgery. Professor Losty has been recipient of many awards some here including British Association Of Paediatric Surgeons (BAPS) Prize, Stephen L Gans International Travelling Fellowship Scholar, James IV Professor Royal College Of Surgeons Of Edinburgh (RCSEd) and the distinguished Matti Sulamma Medal & Key Note Lecturer with the Finnish Association of Pediatric Surgeons. Professor Losty has for many years promoted a thriving clinical and research environement in Liverpool that has supported and nurtured medical students, basic scientists, surgeons in training and consultant surgeons all gain MPhil, MD doctorate and PhD degrees. Many of these graduates are now consultant & attending surgeons in paediatric surgery centres in the UK, Europe, North America, Asia and / or principal Investigators / scientists working in universities and Industry. Paul Losty has been a frequent and popular invited guest lecturer and visiting professor across 5 world continents including Europe, Asia, Africa, USA, Canada and Latin America. Professor Losty serves on the editorial board(s) / assistant editor of several leading journals some here including Journal Of Pediatric Surgery, European Journal Of Pediatric Surgery and most recently British Journal Of Surgery amongst other major role(s) with peer reviewer of over 30 international journals and varied world grant awarding bodies. Professor Losty works closely as a Medical Patron with parent & family charities including here CDH-UK ( congenital diaphragmatic hernia ) and TOFS UK ( oesophageal atresia ). Paul Losty has published more than 175 manuscript publications and contributed actively to many international textbooks in Surgery and Paediatric Surgery. Professor Losty is currently the Editor-in-Chief of two major new textbooks Rickhams’ Neonatal Surgery 2018 and Pediatric Surgical Oncology 2021.
