Personal Statement
Prof. Fiona Rowe is Professor of orthoptics at the University of Liverpool where she is Clinical Lead for the Institute of Population Health, and lead for the VISION research group. Visit our research web pages for details of VISION resources (www.vision-research.co.uk).
She is lead orthoptic editor for the Cochrane Library Eyes and Vision group, and an editorial board member for the British and Irish Orthoptic Journal. She is the Past President of the Society for Research in Rehabilitation and a mentor for the National Institute of Health Research integrated clinical academic training pathway.
Prof. Rowe is the author of two textbooks: ‘Clinical Orthoptics’ and ‘Visual fields via the visual pathway’, author for a number of book chapters, and has presented and published her research extensively. Her particular research interests include visual impairment due to acquired brain injury (leading a number of national stroke projects), visual field evaluation and control of ocular alignment. Prof. Rowe is currently accepting PhD applications in relation to these research interests.

 

Research Overview
Fiona's particular research interests include acquired brain injury, visual field evaluation, strabismus and control of ocular alignment and motility. Research projects include chief investigator for a national multi-centre prospective trial on the visual consequences of stroke (VIS), chief investigator for the VISION trial (funded by the Stroke Association), chief investigation for the IVIS study (funded by the NIHR) and chief investigator for the SEARCH trial (funded by Fight for Sight and Stroke Association). Other projects include evaluating the impact of knowledge of visual impairment to the treatment choices made by therapists in the care of stroke patients, comparison of therapy options for hemianopic visual field loss, evaluation of ward based visual impairment assessment and the comparison of static and kinetic perimetry strategies.
