Personal Statement
Sandy Britton Senior Lecturer joined University of Liverpool School of Architecture full time in 2013 following several years as a part time design tutor. She is a registered architect and came to LSA from practice. Her pedagogy and research embed her professional practice background and straddles academia and practice

Sandy spent a number of years as BA3 Lead and as Internationalisation Lead for School of the Arts.
Currently she is one of six final year undergraduate studio leads in which role she steers collaborative team to develop and deliver studio program materials for the RIBA accredited final year design modules. which equate to 50% of the BA3 curriculum.
She is responsible for curating and coordinating the LSA’s open guest lectures and other significant outward facing events and exhibitions and publications .
Since joining the school Sandy has taught and supervised across UG, MArch and MA programs of the school.


Sandys Studio teaching informs her current pedagogic research both in premise and methodology.
Her studio themes are architecture for Lived Experience, Liveable cities and Fragile Futures with a pedagogy of real world impact and a holistic person and place centred approach.
The studio aims to empower students to help to create healthy sustainable place to live and love

Her studio pedagogy draws on practice experience and is based in local collaborations with multiple stakeholders of : local industry, local authority, community stakeholders and LSA Research Cluster Urban Form and Social Space.

Sandy facilitates multiple public facing and extracurricular events within the School, including hosting the school’s open guest lecture series since 2014 (see links), 2022 Carbon Counts Exhibition, in 2023 the Aga Khan Award for Architecture 2022 Exhibition and Symposium and in 2024 the RIBA/ LSA 100 years celebrations, as well as facilitating student led charettes and symposia, the 2018 and 2019 spring school schools and facilitating the Venice Fellowship programme and British Council Partnership.

Externally Sandy is networked to local national and international practice through her roles with Liverpool Architecture Society , British Council and as an External Examiner.
Before teaching full time Sandy worked at a range of practices sized micro, medium and larger scale on projects including housing, heritage re-use, education and culture.
Additionally, to this she has been involved in multi-disciplinary collaborations including developing worker art space, Liverpool cycle routes and sustainable travel .

She is evolving a collaborative studio pedagogy focusing on live local impact and a holistic person and place -centred approach.

The teaching approach is immersive, live and uses reflective task based exercises as a skill building + shared teaching and learning methodology .
The creative work of the studio is shared and exchanged regularly at project specific locations as part of stakeholder engagement and impact .

During the pandemic delivery was transferred via Teams and Zoom. Digital sharing remains a key part of studio methodology and more recently Sandy has been working with colleagues and international collaborator to investigate the impact of GAI on creativity within studio tasks .

The studio has just completed its third pair of collaborative live projects focussing on High Street Renewal.
