Personal Statement
Dr. Simon Campion serves as the Visualisation Lead at the University of Liverpool’s Virtual Engineering Centre and Digital Innovation Facility, where he has consistently demonstrated leadership in immersive technologies and interactive visualisation. With over 25 years of experience, He has led innovative projects that have advanced research and commercial applications across multiple sectors.

Dr. Campion manages two state-of-the-art facilities, including the University’s mixed reality lab within the Digital Innovation Facility and the XR facility at the UK National Centre for Digital Heritage. Leading a multidisciplinary team of engineers, developers, and artists, he has driven research and delivered bespoke industry solutions.

He excels in leading the development of virtual environments, serious games, educational simulations, and architectural and product visualisation. His proficiency in leading-edge software, alongside expertise in hardware systems including CAVEs, panoramic screens, and motion capture technologies, positions him as a leader in the immersive visualisation domain.

With a career spanning over two decades, He has consistently taken projects from concept to completion, specialising in real-time graphics for both commercial and research ventures. His work exemplifies a unique blend of technical acumen, creativity, and a dedication to advancing knowledge and applications in immersive technology and visualisation.

By aligning research innovation with practical applications, Dr. Campion continues to push the boundaries of digital innovation and immersive visualisation, driving impactful solutions for academia and industry alike.

Research:
Dr. Campion has worked upon projects funded by UKSPF, ERDF, EPSRC, AHRC, InnovateUK, HEIF, Epic Games and Meta. His latest projects at the University of Liverpool are -

Digital Avatars:
Dr. Campion co-leads a Meta Grant project, Bridging Worlds, which develops parametric avatar control tools for neurodiverse individuals.

UK National Centre for Digital Heritage:
Dr. Campion co-leads the AHRC-funded initiative to establish the UK’s Centre for Digital Heritage Research.

Personal Statement
My research focusses on multisensory perception. It ranges from understanding the basic neural mechanisms of how we integrate sensory information to the measurement of user experience in multisensory environments, such as virtual reality and flight simulation.

My work on user experience focusses on the systematic evaluation of subjective and objective measures of perception and performance in multisensory environments. Much of this work is carried out in collaboration with companies such as GE Avionics (Aircraft Passenger Comfort), Sony (3D viewing comfort) or Bentley (User experience and training transfer in VR).

My basic research draws on a range of neuroimaging techniques, such as EEG, fTCD and MR imaging and informs both applied research and clinical applications such as the link between brain structure, musical training and hallucination-proneness, or the use of neuroimaging to optimise rehabilitation after brain injury.

Personal Statement
I am currently Chief Technology Officer at the Virtual Engineering Centre (VEC) and Director of Centre for Digital Heritage (CDH). I am leading various commercial and academic projects, such as developing high fidelity digital framework for Digital Reactor Design project, designing a Big Data analysis solution for JLR Halewood factory and leading Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) LCR 4.0 projects, promoting digital technologies in Liverpool City Region.

I developed and implemented software and hardware solutions for BAE System Airspace Integration project. I was also involved in The Growing Autonomous Mission Management Applications (GAMMA) programme. GAMMA is a three year £9.1 million, Autonomous Systems programme aimed at driving SME engagement and developing technology within the emerging autonomous systems markets.

I worked as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant at the Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development (IESD), De Montfort University for 2.5 years. During this time, I was working on EC FP7: “Knowledge Awareness Prediction of man, machine and method in manufacturing” (KAP) project. KAP aims to develop a generic technology framework that provides new energy management standards and performance indicators, the development of algorithms to automate the measurement process and the design of visual interfaces that can communicate system states in an intuitive manner for a wide range of manufacturing systems. As a result of this work the framework for advanced industrial energy management has been developed and deployed via a prototype information system in a VOLVO Trucks machining line, Skövde plant, Sweden.
