The University of Liverpool is a leading Russell Group research institution, with a strong community of globally recognised academics. Our engineering research strength was recognised in the latest Research Excellence Framework 2021, where we were rated 6th in the UK for outstanding impact.

 

Our interdisciplinary mechanical engineering research explores renewable energy sources while advancing novel concepts and processes, innovating efficient energy technologies, and driving the digitalisation of energy systems. At the forefront of aerospace engineering, our research spans the development of advanced computational fluid dynamics tools, flight simulation and assessment technologies, autonomous flight control systems, and space mission planning.

 

We collaborate closely across the University, including with the Digital Innovation Facility and Virtual Engineering Centre, as well as with external industrial and academic partners. Our exceptional research facilities include full-motion flight simulators, wind tunnels, and a 90,000 L recirculating water tunnel. Supported by a £23 million National Wind Tunnel Facility award, we’ve built a low Reynolds number flow facility, and a new laboratory dedicated to energy technologies and space research is currently under development.
